August 2012 Garden update and call for volunteers

Although this blog has been quiet, lots of progress has been made at the garden this year! On behalf of all of the gardeners, I want to give a huge thanks to Connor from Bowness High School, who built the lovely storage box that will be very handy for storing hoses, nozzles, etc. etc.
Also thanks to Mike, who made the beautiful new sign at the entrance to the garden – it looks fantastic and we are amazed at Mike’s woodworking skills. Not only that, we also have Mike to thank for fixing the water nozzle, so that it’s now possible to connect the water without getting soaked – THANK YOU MIKE!
And thanks to Christine our wonderful volunteer coordinator who does so much work around the garden and over email.
You may have noticed that William and his crew have been steadily working away at the garden this year. They will be out with a bobcat on Friday doing work at the entrance, and William has requested volunteers for this Saturday (August 4) at 9:00 am to help plant some shrubs to make the entrance to the garden beautiful. Please come if you can, it will be a good opportunity to meet other gardeners as well!

Fundraising Opportunity

It is that time of year again that we get going on fundraising campaigns for our community garden and one of the successful fundraisers we did last year was the Purdy’s Chocolates. I will outline the programs below, please feel free to participate in both (more chocolate is always a good thing!) or just one of the two options. Last year we raised $1087.00 and that was just with the steering committee selling chocolate! I’m sure we can at least double that this year with the help of all of you! Here are the three programs:

Chocolate Bars

Milk Almond Bars:
This bar is 100g (King Size) and sells for $5, $2.50 of which goes to the garden! These do come in a case of 22 and you would have to pay for them upfront and then sell them. The retail for a case would be $100. I would need to know how many cases you would like to order by October 7th and would then drop them off at your house and collect the $$. If you feel that you can sell 20 Purdy’s Almond Bars, please get back to me!
Original Fundraising Bar:
These bars are much smaller and sell for $2, $1.05 of which goes to the garden! They are available in cases of 20 and the same would apply, you will need to pay for them upfront. The retail for a case would be $40. They also come in either dark or milk chocolate! I would need to know how many cases you would like to order by October 7th and would then drop them off at your house and collect the $$. This is an easy sell for anyone!
Catalogue Sales – Christmas!!

Help your friends and family get all of their chocolate Christmas shopping done, gift wrapped and delivered! Purdy’s gives back 25% of the sales from the catalogue sales. I will have a bundle of catalogues at the AGM but would be happy to drop one off for anyone who wants to get a head start on their sales. These orders need to be in by November 4th and all chocolates will be delivered well before Christmas. Cheques for the orders need to be made payable to me as I will be putting the order on my credit card. You are also able to go to the Purdy’s website and place an order and pay online with the sales going to the community garden group. I will enclose instructions on how to do this with each catalogue.
Looking forward to another successful fundraiser for our community garden!

Tuscany Community Garden Annual General Meeting

Mark your calenders.

Our garden guidelines require us to have an Annual General Meeting every fall. We have booked a room at the Tuscany Club for this on October 20 from 7-9. Please save the date as we’d like to have as many plot renters as possible attend. At the meeting, we will discuss the garden guidelines, major concerns from the past season, expansion plans for next year, as well as fundraising plans.

If you have any questions please contact Jessica Swanson at jessica.swanson@shaw.ca
